It Came from Netflix Instant vol. 11   Leave a comment

Welcome back! AtomicSam.com has been been down for a while, but after much contemplation I figure there is no better day than today to wake it back up.  With that, I bring to you the latest edition of my favorite ongoing segment, It Came from Netflix Instant!  I sort through the endless options on Netflix and find the movies that are worth your time.

Horns – 2013

Horns is a smart adaptation of Joe Hill‘s 2010 horror novel.  The story follows Ig Perrish, who, after being accused of murdering his girlfriend, finds that he is growing devilish horns.  Anyone he talks to spills their darkest secrets to him and will do what ever wicked deeds he commands them to.  Ig elects to use his new found powers to find his girlfriend’s real killer.

I think Horns might have worked better as a mini series, considering the movie lacks a lot of the back story and character development that book offers.  But, if this is an indicator of how his other work will adapt to screen, Hill may very well inherit his father’s (Stephen King) mantel as one of the modern masters of mystery and horror.

It Came From Netflix Instant! Halloween Edition Week 5: The Crow   Leave a comment

Halloween is nearly upon us! With that I have one last installment of It Came For Netflix Instant! before we hit the official start of Christmas.  Because, as we all know, Thanksgiving is just something you imagined and has never been a real holiday.  ICFNI! is my almost weekly segment where I find the movies on Netflix that are worth watching, and you can watch right now! Since it is October, all the movies this month have been geared toward the coming of the Great Pumpkin.

This week we look at a film series that has its ups and downs over the years, but is always Halloween appropriate, The Crow.

Based on the comic book of the same name, the Crow films have been go cult favorites since the 90s.  The film spawned three sequels and a short lived TV series (not to mention that there is always threat of a reboot) and all of it can be watched right now!

The Crow – 1994

Brandon Lee, in the role that killed him, is an anti hero who comes back from the dead the night before Halloween to avenge his and his fiancee’s murders.  He also busts up crime and corruption on the streets of Detroit, finds time to save junkies from them selves and teaches a young girl about the importance of understanding.

This movie bleeds 1994.

Also it has a killer soundtrack that may or may not have been something that I listened to on loop on my Walkman all through high school.

This move has a diehard fan base and you should join us.

Not all of the Crow movies, however, are as beloved… but that does not make them any less fun to watch!

It Came From Netflix Instant! Halloween 2013 Part 4! Spooky Fun Edition!   2 comments

Halloween season keeps on trucking! You have one week left to get you fright on! Or, if you are like me, you live your life in a perpetual haze of campy horror and the Halloween season never truly ends.

We return to It Came From Netflix Instant! my now almost weekly series.  I sort through the endless crap on Netflix Instant that most people have either never heard of or have forgotten about to find the movies that are worth the money that you have already paid to watch.  This month it is all about spooky, as I search for the best Halloween trick and treats!

This week I am taking a look at movies that are as funny as they are scary.  For the nights when you want to laugh along with your screams.

Movies don’t stay on Netflix Instant forever, so catch them while you can!

ParaNorman  – 2012

This was one of my favorite movies from last summer.  It was a bit overlooked in theaters, having been released in August as to get the DVD out before Halloween 2012.  The reviews were positive and the returns were fine considering it’s $60M budget.

ParaNorman has a ton of heart, and the care with which this movie was made really shows through.  It was groundbreaking in the world of stop motion, as this was the first film to use color 3D printers to create puppets. This sped up animation, while keeping the production value high.

A must watch.

It Came From Netflix Instant! Halloween is Comming Week 3!   Leave a comment

Anyway, there is a lot lot lot of terrible crap on Netflix Instant and it is my goal to help guide you around it to find only the best crap!  This week I am proud to recommend the following:

Carrie – 1976

The verdict is in on the remake and it is mixed at best.  The original is a classic and if you haven’t seen it get some popcorn going and cancel your plans to see the new version.  I’m mean, it’s got John Travolta! What could be better!

It Came From Netflix Instant! Halloween is Coming Part 2 -90’s Style!   Leave a comment

Another round of It came From Neflix Instant! for your Halloween season! In It Came From Netflix Instant! I wade though the mostly terrible movies available on Netflix instant to find you what’s worth watching.

In today’s installment I am looking back at the movies I had to sneak into because I was too young to get a rated R ticket! 90s Teen Horror!

Side note, I miss the thrill of sneaking into R rate movies. It made me feel like a rebel.

Side note two, every trailer on this list has the same voice over guy.  The late great Don LaFontaine.  One day I’ll have to do a post about his work.

Scream – 1996

A masked slasher terrorizes sexy high school student, Neve Campbell.  Then, everyone dressed like Ghost Face for Halloween ’96.  Literally everyone, figuratively.

The original and best 90s teen scream classic Scream as well as two of is sequels, Scream 2 (1997) and Scream 3 (2000) are currently on Instant Watch, waiting for you to marathon through them.  The fourth film, which was surprisingly good (not actually good, just better than you would have expected and worth watching if you like the other movies.) is currently only available on DVD.  So, add that shiz to your queue.

It Came From Netflix Instant! Halloween is Coming Edition!   Leave a comment

Welcome back from more It Came From Netflix Instant!, my semi-regular series helping you navigate the choppy waters of Netflix Instant.  Get the pop corn, candy corn, corn chips and corn on the cob ready!  It’s October that means it’s scary movie season!

You will probably see me post a few more installments this month, as I make it a point to watch at least one new scary movie a day during October.  So keep checking back!

And remember, this move on and off instant watch from time to time, so check these out while you can!

Here are some movies that are worth your time!

Rise of the Zombies

RISE-001The cast of this B-Movie zombie flick is the reason I had to click on it. LeVar Burton, Danny Trejo, French Stewart, Ethan Suplee and Mariel Hemingway.  The casting director must have just scraped up who ever happened to be available and already in their phone that day.

It’s your standard zombie flick, from movie knock-off masters The Aslyum, drawing on The Walking Dead for the most part.  It showed up on SyFy for Halloween last year.  I can’t call it good, but I can call it entertaining.  Machete vs. Zombies? Who could complain?

It Came From Netflix Instant!!! Saturday Morning Edition!   Leave a comment

Welcome back to another installment of It Came From Nextflix Instant!!!

Are you desperately holding on to your fleeting youth, like me? Do you long for the days of your childhood? Getting up on a Saturday morning with a big bowl of Honey Smacks and watching cartoons in your PJs?

Growing up is over rated!

You can have that again through the power of Netflix Instant! And I have taken it on myself to wade through hours of cartoons so that I can show you where to start!

Transformers: Prime

prime

A few months back I tried watching an episode of the 1980s classic Transformers series, only to discover that it was not the groundbreaking work I had remembered it to be.  In fact it sucked.  I felt like my childhood was a lie.

The good news is that the most recent Transformers series, Transformers; Prime, does not suck! It is inspired largely by the movies, and also takes a lot from the dynamic of Transformers Animated.  The series draws from all over the established Transformers mythos, everywhere from the original series, to Beast Wars (also on Netflix instant) and even the UK edition of the comics.

The writing is some of the best that there has ever been in the Transformers franchise.  The characters are literally and figuratively three dimensional.  If you loved the original show, but recognize that it is not as good as you remember, then this is the cartoon for you!
