New Science/SciFi/Fantasy/Horror Shows for Spring and Summer 2014… And when they will end!   Leave a comment

Boy Howdy! It has been quiet here over the last few months! I am so sorry to have deprived the internet of my colorful commentary regarding the world of pop culture.  Lets get back into the swing of things with one of my favorite guessing games! When Will All the New Shows Get Canceled?!

Black Box  – April 24 2014

The premise of this show reads like a cross between House M.D. and Perception.  A medical mystery show where each episode revolves diagnosing a patient who is experiencing “rare, highly visual, often hallucinogenic and startling conditions.”  The twist is that the main character, Catherine Black (Kelly Reilly) is suffering from bipolar disorder her self, and struggles with sticking to her medication regiment.

I’m torn on this one.  On one hand, I think that mental illness should be one of the highest priorities for the health care industry, and that starts with awareness.  One great way to bring awareness to the subject is by bringing the discussion directly into peoples homes.

But on the other hand, looks like this show has taken the stance that bipolar disorder makes you super sexy and self-destructive.  For people living with mental illness, who are already facing social stigma and unwarranted prejudice, this won’t be the image they want to put forward.

Cancellation Prediction:

Quietly after season four, with the characters enjoying a long life in shipping fan-fics.

Extant – July 2, 2014

What we know about this show so far is that Halle Berry plays an astronaut who “returns home from a year-long solo mission in space and tries to reconnect with her husband and son in their everyday life. Her experiences in space and home lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history.”

The preview shows space babies, eye balls and explains that the title of the show refers to the biological distinction of a species to be non-extinct.

What does this all mean? Is it about the human race being on the verge of extinction, with Halle Berry holding the secret of our survival?  Or, did she perhaps discover an alien species alive out in space that is coming to Earth?  Did she slip through a hole in time and see humanity reach its own self destructive end?

My guess is that the mystery of the show is fairly weak, which is why the mystery itself is a mystery. But filming only just started so maybe its too early to make judgment calls.

Cancellation Prediction:

Even though a 13 episode run has been ordered (before a pilot was ever produced, I might add) I think it this show will peter out before they are all aired.  It will be released on DVD and quickly found in the K-Mart bargain bin.  Someone will buy it for you next Christmas, even though you never showed interest in the series.  The will remain on your shelf for a few years still wrapped in shrink wrap.  Maybe you’ll watch it next time you have a sick day…  You won’t.

El Ray

From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series – March 11

This will be the first original series for El Ray, the Latino focused cable network owned in part by Robert Rodriguez. The film on which the series is based, and its sequels, center around a bar that is run by some vicious – but highly attractive- vampires. The show will use the original film as the basis for the story, but will dive deeper into the mythology of the vampires and their Aztec origins.

Cancellation Prediction:

Fast.  It looks… I don’t know… cheap? It could be a low budget direct to VOD remake.

The Strain – July 2014

Vampires, but unlike From Dusk Till Dawn these are going to be non-sexy vampires.  I won’t go into to much about what separates these vampires from their contemporary modern day counter parts, but from what I read they strike me as something akin to the vampires from 30 Days of Night.  It is from the minds of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, based on a series of novels they wrote together (written specifically to use to pitch the show).  The novels received mixed reviews.

Cancellation Prediction

Del Toro’s track record is a bit of an enigma.  His work is visually stunning and thought provoking; putting his name on a project pretty much grantees critical acclaim.  But it is less often that his critical accolades result in commercial success.   Even Pacific Rim, which should have been a slam dunk struggled with domestic audiences.  If his past work is any indication there will be a small but devoted audience that will keep the show afloat for a time. I’ll venture a guess at three seasons.

Silicon Valley – April 6, 2014

I like Martin Starr.

Cancellation Prediction:

I just don’t feel like there is much to say about this show.  Feels tired right from the get go.

Penny Dreadful – May 11, 2014

All of the classic literary monsters are alive in Victorian era London, and things get sexy.  It strikes me as the British answer to American Horror Story.

Cancellation Prediction:

Five strong seasons, followed by two weak seasons.  The audience will be left wondering where things went sour, but will find themselves re-watching the early episodes.

Salem – April 20, 2014

A show about the Salem witch trails, where the witches turn out to be real.  Looks like a high quality show, in the same vain as a lot of the successful dark-supernatural-period-dramas that are floating around now. I would watch it.

Cancellation Prediction:

WOULD being the operative word.  The twist of this show is that it isn’t going to be seen in most of New England as  WGN America isn’t carried by all cable providers.  In fact it only reaches about 65% of households.  The Salem Witch Trials are a part of New England’s identity, and it is where the biggest audience for this series resides (Myself included.  We live for this stuff.).  Without the strength of that audience to back the show, even if it is good, I don’t think it can last. So I give it one season.

Those are my predictions! Do you agree or disagree? Please note that I can not see the future and any predictions I get correct are purely coincidental!
